Shop Order — Rank vs Relic vs Item (When to Spend Shards)
A practical Guildrun Demo shop priority for Shards — when to buy Rank B, when a relic is the real spike, and when an item beats both.
Updated Aug 4, 2026
Guildrun shops are where runs are won. Combat is the report card; Shards are the test. This guide answers one question for Demo 0.5.7:
On this screen, should I buy a Rank, a Relic, or an Item?
It is not a tier list. It is a priority filter. Use it after you know why you are weak — if you just wiped, run Why did I wipe? first.
The default priority (when nothing is on fire)
Use this order unless a section below overrides it:
- Survive the next opener — a body or placement that stops the carry dying first.
- Rank the win condition once — usually one carry or one wall to B.
- Enable your keywords — a relic or item that makes Rush / Stall / Crit / Shield actually fire.
- Amplify — second relic, luxury Unique, off-plan items.
- Horizonal greed — extra heroes, speculative Uniques, even spreads across the roster.
Most lost runs invert this list: Unique first, Rank never, opener still naked.
Rank — when the level-up is the spike
Buy Rank when:
- One hero clearly wins fights if they live and cast (examples: Nyx, Irini, Aria, Funke).
- You are approaching a challenge / boss node and still have all C-ranks.
- A Rank B specialization path is the actual build (execute tribal, Rush AS, Shield wall) and you already know which branch you want.
Skip Rank when:
- Nobody can tank the entry hex — Rank on a dead carry is a donation.
- You are one enabler away from making your relics work (for example you own Rush payoffs but nobody triggers Rush).
- You would Rank a flex unit “because Shards were burning” while the carry stays C.
Practical rule: One intentional B beats three accidental C→C cosmetic upgrades. Look up the hero’s specialization notes on their page before you lock the branch.
Relic — when the shop piece is the plan
Buy a Relic when:
- It is an engine or banner for a class/keyword you already drafted (see Reading relic offers).
- It fixes the failure sentence from the last fight (“Rush never fired,” “no Shield on contact”).
- It is a cheap Common/Rare enabler that turns on an expensive Unique you already took.
Skip a Relic when:
- The condition will not happen most fights (on-kill with no execute, Stall with a pure race board, class banner with one dabbler).
- You still have zero Rank spike and the next node is a wall.
- You are buying Unique rarity to feel progress while the opener checklist is red.
Practical rule: Every relic should answer “who triggers this every combat?” If you cannot answer, it is not a shop priority — it is a trap with good art.
Browse by tag when stuck: Rush, Stall, Crit, Shield, or the full Relics index. Each relic page’s Shop decision block is written for this exact moment.
Item — when gear beats another relic
Buy an Item when:
- Your carry’s job is clear and the item’s stats/keywords are that job (Crit on a Crit carry, Defense on the wall, Attack Speed on a stacker).
- You need a small, reliable swing this fight and relics on offer are off-plan.
- A relic condition is already online and the item multiplies it (for example Crit item after Crit engines).
Skip an Item when:
- You are itemizing a hero who still dies first — placement/tank first.
- The item is off-class greed while a class-tagged piece for your actual carry is available.
- You have no Rank B and no keyword engine; another shiny stick will not invent a win condition.
Practical rule: Items are precision tools. Relics are often identity. Ranks are breakpoints. If your identity is missing, itemizing C-ranks is polishing a draft that does not exist yet.
Use Items and the item page Shop decision notes the same way you use relic notes.
Overrides — ignore the default order
You are dying on contact
Priority becomes: formation → tank hero/relic → then Rank the carry.
Do not Rank the carry into the same dive tile. Do not Unique into a collapsing board.
Your keywords are dead
Priority becomes: enabler relic/item → then Rank.
A Rank B Nyx with zero Rush support can still feel weak; a Rank C with working Rush can clear the next pack.
The next node is a known spike (challenge / boss)
Priority becomes: one Rank B or one hard enabler, not a wide shop of maybes. Spend like you expect this fight to end the run if you whiff.
You are flooded with Shards late
Priority becomes: finish the carry’s item slots and on-plan Uniques, not a sixth hero who dilutes class banners. Extra bodies are not automatic strength in Guildrun.
Dual-class temptation (Tilly, Rowan, Zuri)
Priority becomes: commit one fantasy before buying every dual-tagged offer. Shop order fails when every relic is “technically legal” and none are online together.
A simple shop script (30 seconds)
- Say the failure or goal in one line (“opener,” “need Rush,” “Rank Irini”).
- Scan offers that answer that line only.
- If Rank is that answer and the hero will live — Rank.
- Else if a relic enables or is the identity — Relic.
- Else if an item sharpens the same job — Item.
- Else reroll / leave / take economy — do not force a off-plan Unique.
Examples (Demo mindset)
Example A — Carry dies first, you have a Warrior in shop and a Unique Crit relic.
Buy or place the wall / move the carry. The Unique waits. Rank the carry only after they stop eating the opener.
Example B — Board lives, Rush relics do nothing, Irini is still C.
Buy a Rush enabler or Attack Speed that makes Rush real, or Rank Irini if her path is the Rush stacker and she already triggers it. Do not add a Stall Unique “for value.”
Example C — Keywords online, fight length is fine, challenge next.
Rank B on the carry or wall. Items that complete the same plan are fine. Off-class banners are not.
FAQ
Should I always Rank before relics?
No. Rank is the default breakpoint when the hero is the plan and can live. Enabler relics beat Rank when your paid keywords are inert.
Are Uniques ever early buys?
Yes — when they are the enabler or the only way to stabilize (rare). Most early Uniques are ego buys. Read Skip when on the relic page.
What if the shop shows nothing on-plan?
Reroll if the economy allows, take a flexible Common enabler, or leave gold on a future node. Taking a random Epic to “use the shop” is how identities rot.
How does this work with published builds?
Builds tell you a target shape. This guide tells you the order to buy pieces when the shop is incomplete. Follow the build’s gameplan steps, not every listed relic the moment it appears.
