Guildrun Growth Route — Rank C to S, Board Size & When to Expand

A Demo 0.5.7 growth route for Guildrun: Rank C→B→A→S decisions, when to expand the board, symptom-based upgrade order, and how to finish a carry without soft-locking the run.

Updated Sep 5, 2026

Guildrun runs are a growth problem disguised as a shop problem. You do not need every hero at Rank S. You need the right breakpoints at the right board size so the next fight is solvable. This Growth Route guide is the Demo 0.5.7 manual for that path.

Use it when you are stuck deciding:

  • Rank this hero or recruit another?
  • Specialize now or stabilize first?
  • Expand the field or finish the carry?
  • Take Rank A/S greed or fix the missing job?

Shard priority inside one shop screen still lives on Shop order. This page is the route across the whole run.

The growth route at a glance

| Stage | Board feeling | Default action | | --- | --- | --- | | 1 · Opening | Jobs unclear, everyone C | Cover wall + damage; do not greed copies | | 2 · First spike | One hero is carrying fights | First intentional Rank B on that hero | | 3 · Expansion | One fantasy works, other jobs missing | Add a new job, not a fourth clone | | 4 · Engine | Combat is stable enough | Lock a relic / modifier line that fires every fight | | 5 · Final shape | Challenge / boss pressure | Finish the carry; last slot answers the matchup |

That is the same five-step strip on the homepage Growth Route — this article is the full decision text behind it.

Rank ladder: what you are actually buying

| Rank | What it usually means | Buy when… | Skip when… | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | C | Base kit | The hero already has a useful job on the board | You drafted a name you cannot place or feed | | B | One of three specializations (some add a class) | This hero is already winning fights if they live | Nobody can tank; Rank on a corpse is a donation | | A | Package + first class modifier from the active pool | Your engine is online and the modifier will trigger often | You still lack Rank B on the win condition | | S | Demo ceiling: second package / modifier (+ item flexibility) | Finishing this carry beats expanding again | A missing job or dead keyword still explains losses |

Open any hero page (for example Irini, Aria, Fiona) to see Rank art and specialization names before you lock a branch.

Hard rule: one intentional B beats three accidental cosmetic upgrades. Dual-class Rank B paths change later modifier pools — treat them as route choices, not cosmetics.

Stage 1 — Opening (mostly C)

Goal: survive and learn, not invent the final Endless board.

  • Field one wall and one clear damage dealer.
  • Optional third: sustain, control, or economy — not a second glass carry.
  • Keep formations simple: wall front, carry back. Details: Player Handbook.

Do not:

  • fill the board with four copies of the same fantasy,
  • Rank randomly because Shards were burning,
  • take a Unique that needs a tag nobody triggers yet.

If you want a worked example of job coverage, skim Builds or the Tier List — as templates, not scripts.

Stage 2 — First spike (first Rank B)

Goal: create a breakpoint the next gate fight can feel.

Specialize the hero who is already doing the job, not your favorite portrait.

Good first B targets:

  • the carry who wins when they live (Nyx, Irini, Aria, …),
  • or the wall who enables that carry (Pimenta, Reyna, Rip, …) if openers still delete the backline.

Skip first B when the wipe sentence is still “carry ate first hit.” Fix placement / wall first (fight-loss checklist).

Stage 3 — Expansion (new job, not new clone)

Goal: unlock coverage the seed is asking for.

Ask one question before every recruit:

What new job does this hero add?

| Symptom | Expand toward | | --- | --- | | Carry dies first | Real wall / peel (Tank, Vanguard) | | Fights end before casts | Mana / Stall enabler, or safer geometry | | Rush never fires | Rush partner or duration tools — see Rush vs Stall | | Long fights, no sustain | Mystic shields / recovery | | Need execute / pick | Assassin flex — only after a wall exists |

Anti-pattern: fourth Duelist before any wall. That is collection, not growth.

Board-size greed (paying to field another body) only pays if the new slot has a job ready now. An empty hex with a C-rank tourist is worse than a tight three with a real B spike.

Stage 4 — Engine (modifier / relic identity)

Goal: name the run out loud and stop drafting against it.

Examples of engines:

  • Rush Duelists + Acceleration-style payoffs
  • Stall Mage + Mage / Stall banners
  • Shield Warrior / Mystic sustain

Rules:

  1. Every paid keyword needs a hero who triggers it most fights.
  2. Prefer an enabler Common/Rare over a second Unique with the same dead condition.
  3. Class modifiers at Rank A should fire often — cute once-per-boss text is usually wrong.

Learn offer language in Banner vs Engine vs Unique. Browse tags on Keywords when the shop confuses you.

Stage 5 — Final shape

Goal: convert remaining Shards into the fight in front of you.

  • Finish the carry (Rank / items) once the wall and engine exist.
  • Use the last slot for matchup answers (extra Frost, Burn, peel, economy), not a random fourth fantasy.
  • Before challenge / boss / Red Rift pressure: empty the wallet on power you can use this fight.

If you still do not know whether to Rank, Relic, or Item on the current screen, open Shop order.

Symptom table (use after every loss)

Write one wipe sentence, then pick the growth action:

| Wipe sentence | Growth action | | --- | --- | | “Carry died first” | Placement / wall — not more damage Rank | | “Nobody cast” | Survive + Mana/tempo — then Rank the caster | | “Rush/Stall never fired” | Enabler hero or relic — see tempo guide | | “We have three of the same job” | Expand a missing job or cut a clone | | “Board feels weak but wallet is full” | Intentional Rank B on the win condition | | “Engine is online, bosses still race us” | Finish carry (A/S / items) or add sustain flex |

Changing placement, ranks, and relics in one shop teaches nothing. Change the row that matches the sentence.

How Growth Route relates to other hub pages

| Page | Use it for | | --- | --- | | Getting Started | Full Demo loop and beginner traps | | Player Handbook | Formation and first-contact rules | | Shop order | This-screen Shard priority | | Tier List / Builds | Named packages once you know your engine | | Hero / class pages | Specialization text before locking Rank B |

Closing mindset

Growth in Guildrun is serial, not parallel. Stabilize jobs → spike one hero → add missing coverage → lock an engine → finish the plan. Players who upgrade everything a little stay permanently almost-ready for the next gate.

Walk one calm Demo 0.5.7 clear with this route. When losses become explainable (“wrong job,” “early B on the wrong unit,” “expanded before the spike”), you are ready for harder rungs — not when you simply want a louder badge.
